A subtle spring for women’s dresses
Spring 2010 is shaping up to be an unusually subtle season in terms of the prevailing trend for understated colour schemes in women’s clothing. Spring and summer are often seasons characterised by bold prints and brightly coloured women’s dresses. Spring 2010 however has seen plenty of nude tones and more subtle ice cream colours on offer.
This general mood of restraint and poise is further being expressed in soft lines, with floating layers of delicate fabrics being the order of the day, augmented by frills and draping. Understated femininity and a reference to classic stylings are this seasons approach to women’s dresses. Perhaps this is a response for the desire for less faddy, more timeless appeal in women’s clothing this year, as the current age of austerity perhaps demands that women’s dresses should be good for more than just one season.
Sweet shop colours like candy floss pink, lilac and spearmint are evident in many of the big fashion designers spring collections, in stark contrast to the shocking pinks, reds and stark blacks on offer last year, bold looks that in turn clearly delineated a stylistic place in time.
Perhaps it is no surprise given these leanings to quite subtle and classic styling that head to toe white is also featuring heavily this season. White fabric lends itself to a natural display of form and cut, accentuating clean lines and focussing the eye without bombarding with colour. The layered approach indicated by the delicate fabrics popular this spring also work particularly well in plain white. Again, timeless style is the key, with the all-white outfit speaking of ageless elegance.
The twist in pulling off this season’s in-form style is to balance the delicate femininity of floaty, layered fabrics with some more masculine-edged accessorising. Chunky heeled shoes and no nonsense leather belts will complete the balancing act of poise and power. A quick and easy way to get a visual on these trends is to look online at the sites of suppliers like New Look to get an idea of the women’s dresses and other clothing on offer this Spring Season.
