Shoes for the Spring Season

Spring 2010 sees an eclectic mix of shoes on the market, a magpie mix of all the best bits in recent years. The only exception to this trend is the return of a bit of a blast from the past, with a style that has been dormant for the last few years – save a cameo last spring – the wedge heel. That’s right, the comeback queen of the year has pretty much already been crowned – the wedge heel is back with a stack, baby.

There are several reasons to welcome back this chunky cousin of the heel. Wedges are far more stable, and comfortable to wear, than other heels like stilettos. Perhaps another reason for the dominance of the wedge in the current spring collections is the potential for showcasing the hot materials of this season, notably cork and rope accents.

Wedges will go well with pretty much any length of skirt or dress, and can give definition and shape to the heavier ankle, making the ankle look a little thinner. Flowing, bohemian skirts look great with a wedge heel, and the thin, gauzy fabrics that are so popular this spring will all be augmented in such an ensemble. Try to steer clear of pencil skirts and narrow or straight legged trousers generally, however, as these never seem to work well with the wedge.

Sandals are also going chunky this season, with the welcome return of some heavier – and therefore more versatile – woven and wide collared sandals. Bootie sandals have also featured heavily in the fashion press this year. Take a look at what I’m talking about with a quick peek online at sites like New Look to see the kind of thing that’s going to be dominating shoes on the high street this spring. Woven, gladiator and platform – the sandal is looking versatile for 2010.

Hopefully, we will have the kind of summer that the Met Office has now barred itself from declaring ‘barbecue’, and therefore get a decent opportunity to flaunt some open toe wedges and sandals this year. From dressy to funky, there really are a good range of options for your feet this year – bring on the summer!
