Spring 2010 sees an eclectic mix of shoes on the market, a magpie mix of all the best bits in recent years. The only exception to this trend is the return of a bit of a blast from the past, with a style that has been dormant for the last few years – save a cameo last spring – the wedge heel. That’s right, the comeback queen of the year has pretty much already been crowned – the wedge heel is back with a stack, baby.

There are several reasons to welcome back this chunky cousin of the heel. Wedges are far more stable, and comfortable to wear, than other heels like stilettos. Perhaps another reason for the dominance of the wedge in the current spring collections is the potential for showcasing the hot materials of this season, notably cork and rope accents. (more…)

Spring 2010 is shaping up to be an unusually subtle season in terms of the prevailing trend for understated colour schemes in women’s clothing. Spring and summer are often seasons characterised by bold prints and brightly coloured women’s dresses. Spring 2010 however has seen plenty of nude tones and more subtle ice cream colours on offer.

This general mood of restraint and poise is further being expressed in soft lines, with floating layers of delicate fabrics being the order of the day, augmented by frills and draping. Understated femininity and a reference to classic stylings are this seasons approach to women’s dresses. Perhaps this is a response for the desire for less faddy, more timeless appeal in women’s clothing this year, as the current age of austerity perhaps demands that women’s dresses should be good for more than just one season.
